How To Make A Double Boiler At Home

When producing an organic cream or Soap at home, you may want to liquefy some ingredients, or probably just heat them up to a certain temperature. Direct heating on the stove may denature the organic ingredients or perhaps they get burnt due to high temperature. That is where a double boiler comes to the rescue. With a double boiler, your ingredients get heated up slowly, so you have total control over the temperature needed.

How To Make A Double Boiler At Home
A double boiler consists of a bowl ( preferably glass, pyrex or metal) placed on top of a pan of simmering water. The bowl does not touch the water, but there is a vacuum between the bottom pan and the bowl to trap the steam produced by the simmering water. let the two fit tightly, you don't want a gap between the sides of the bowl and pan, nor do you want a bowl sitting on a very small pan.
You can buy a double boiler, but it’s easy to make a double boiler at home . To use the double boiler, add water to the pan and bring it to a simmer, then place the bowl on top and fill it with whatever you intend to cook or melt.

NB: When using an home made double boiler, be extra careful to avoid being scalded by the steam, and take care not to burn yourself when removing the inner bowl.
